Do you have a room in your home that you’ve considered never finished? I have one and in my home, it’s our den. When we first moved into the house four years ago, we had no idea what we wanted to do with that room. We’re not formal den people and so as the years passed, we continued to try to figure out what to do with the room.
That poor room tends to be the catch-all for everything and has somewhat turned into the room where I store some of my extra craft supplies and home decor. The only item in that room that should truly be there is a picture of an elephant that I purchased for E years ago for his birthday, and his Grandmother’s 1954 Singer sewing machine. We decided this was going to be the month to work on the den and we made a deal with each other that it would be completed by the end of April.
As I mentioned before, we aren’t formal people and the first thing at hand was to decide what the purpose of the room would be. While we can’t have large gatherings at the moment, we know that will change and the one thing that is consistent about our den is that when we do entertain, the den is always the overflow of guests.
Not only is it the overflow of guests, even with just the two of us here, it’s also where we end up playing games or even when we have our own personal happy hours (because where else are you going to go to happy hour in a pandemic other than your own house)?
We decided to turn the den into a lounge, entertainment area, which is perfect! It’s one of the first rooms you see when you walk into the house, it’s across from the dining room and the kitchen so it is easy to have an open flow of transporting food and mingling with guests. The next question is what do we want and/or need in the den to accomplish this goal?
Ideas for the den
Over the next eight weeks, I’m going to share the transformation of this room with you. We’ll have a great time and it will be nice to have you along as I turn this room into something we’ve been wanting to tackle for years!
My initial ideas for the den are to have three to four chairs, an accent table, a shelf, a bar/wine cart, and a few decorative pieces. I love shopping at Birch Lane. They have such a wonderful variety of decor for all of the rooms in your home. As I knew I would, I found several pieces that I love and the difficult choice is narrowing it down because there are so many choices!
Below are just a few of the furniture ideas that I have for the room.
I wish there was a way to make our den larger so that I could just buy one of everything, but I can’t so I will have to make some tough decisions and decide what to choose.
Now that I’ve shared the ideas I have, you’re probably wondering what’s next? Next week I’ll share my mood board and give the list of aaalll the things I’ve got to do to get this room ready for the big reveal in the next few weeks.
Which pieces from Birch Lane are your favorite?
