How to Organize Your Desktop

Organize Desktop

I met one of my oldest and dearest friends at a local coffee shop.  One of the reasons we were meeting, other than just to catch up was for me to organize her desktop.  I couldn’t see her computer screen!  She saved everything on her desktop and at this point, it was completely filled with the icons from the files; there were layers and layers of file icons.

I can’t stand a cluttered desktop-drives me crazy.  The minute my desktop starts getting cluttered, I have to file everything away.  There is a way to easily organize your desktop.

Everyone has their own filing system, but for me, it’s easier to group things by what they are for.  I was talking to a friend of mine on the phone a couple of weeks ago and she said her boyfriend filed everything by document type, which means all spreadsheets were filed together, all presentation documents were together, etc.  That would never work because I wouldn’t want to have to open several different folders to get what I need for one thing.

On my computer, everything is filed away by subject matter.  For example, if I am working on a website for a client, I have a main folder with either my client’s name or the business name.  Within that folder, I have several other folders; one for images, one for web copy, one for opt-in, etc.  By having one main folder and all the contents about that subject in one place, makes life easier.  I go to the main folder, click, and voila, everything I need is right there!

The above image is my desktop and by most people’s standards, there isn’t a lot on my desktop.  For me, it’s too much so it’s time to clean it up!

I’ll use my blog posts as an example.  Every blog post I write has its own folder.

How to clean your desktop

For this post, I have a folder called how to organize your desktop.  I will then create a folder for each element of this post.  I have a folder called images and within images, there will be 2 folders; once named raw and the other named final.  Should I decide to have printables, I created a folder called printables.

Within each of these folders is the information I need for that specific element.  The 2 folders within the images folder are the raw images, the ones I took with no editing, and the final images are the actual images used for the blog post; these are the edited images.

The printables folder will have the Pages (Word Processor for Mac) version and the PDF version of each printable.  It will also contain any images that I use for the printables.  Why am I placing images in this folder?  Because the printables will have images and these images are a part of the printable only.

How to organize your desktop

See how easy it is to keep things organized?  It may take a few extra minutes, but you’ll be glad you did when you need to find something.  I have an external hard drive  with thousands of files.  Unfortunately, I used it before I adopted this system.  I hate when I need to retrieve a file from it because it literally takes me a good hour to find what I need because there is no rhyme or reason to where I filed it away!

Just a reminder, to organize your desktop, follow these 2 simple steps:

  1. Create a main folder based on the subject.
  2. Within the main folder (how to clean your desktop), add a folder for every element.

For example, if you have a lot of family photos on your desktop, you would have family photos as the main folder.  You would then create a folder called kids, all family, etc, and place the pictures in their correct folder.  It would look like this:
  • Family Photos (This is the main subject.  Everything within this main folder is a family photo).
    • Kids (There is more than 1 child and there are pictures taken of each child individually)
      • Johhny
      • Kayla
    • Mom
    • Dad
    • Cousins

With just a couple of clicks, you’ll be able to quickly and easily find all the information you need!  It’s much easier to find everything you need rather than digging through a lot of files!

Is it time to clean off your desktop?  How to you keep your files organized so you can find what you need?
See ya later!
