How to Add Your Personality to Your Home’s Decor With Small Details

Slowly but surely, with all of our DIY home decor projects, we are turning this house into a home.  We haven’t been here a year yet, but we’ve gotten so much accomplished!  The other day while I was doing laundry, as I looked in each room, I noticed all of the little touches around the house.  Making your home reflect your personality is one of the most fun things about home decor!  Who wants to live in a house that represents someone else?

A house really is just a house and it’s not until you do one simple, yet a very important thing that it becomes a home.  That one simple, very important thing is to add small details.  It sounds like such a simple thing, but it’s what brings the house to life and turns it into your home.  With the small added details, it’s not just another house; it’s your home!  You have to bring you to life in your home!

What are Small Details?

Before I explain small details, let me start with the big details.  A big detail is paint.  Paint is a big thing because it can make or break a room.  You can paint a room and it’s still just a room.  Our formal living room is painted and that’s about it. There isn’t any furniture and when I walk in, it feels like just a big, empty, hollow space.  It’s a pretty color, but it has no warmth to it.

To have your home reflect your personality, small details are how you bring yourself into a room; it’s what brings a room to life! E’s favorite animal is an elephant.  The formal living room has a large picture of an elephant that I gave E several years ago for his birthday.

New Orleans is one of our favorite places to visit and so we have a curio cabinet full of masks; each time we go to New Orleans we get some.

These masks are memories for us and with each one, we have a story.

I love jewelry.  It’s a bad addiction, but I have it with both jewelry and shoes.  In my closet, the small details are this picture about shoes and the necklace displays I have on the shelves to show off some of my favorite pieces of jewelry.

E is a big fan of whiskey, cognac, cigars, and loves clothes, and accessories.  You’ll see this when we’re done with his closet and I do the room reveal (hint: we turned a bedroom into a closet for him.).  But, here’s a sneak peak:

When people come over and see the transformation of the bedroom being turned into a closet, we often here, “That looks like E.” or we’ve also heard, “This is exactly how I would expect E’s closet to look.”  That is the best compliment when it comes to the decor and your rooms.  It should be an extension of you, who you are and what you like!

How can you get your home reflect your personality?

Here are 5 steps on how to make your home reflect your personality.  After each of these steps, ask yourself, “Does this feel like me?”  If your answer is no, it’s time to go back to the drawing board.

  1. Write down 5 words you want to come to people’s mind when they are visiting your home.
  2. For each of those 5 words, write down decorating ideas to help you get to those words.
  3. Go to home decor blogs or websites to get some inspiration.  Sites like Pinterest (Feel free to check out my boards for color palettes for the homebedroom inspirationbedroom closet inspiration, bathroom inspiration, living room inspiration, and kitchen inspiration.
  4. Create a mood board so that you have an idea and feel for your room.
  5. Go shopping for decorating ideas and decor either in brick and mortar stores or online.

Your home should be a place you love to be and are able to relax.  If it’s not, there are changes to make!  Adding small decor details throughout your rooms will bring out your personality throughout your home.

How do you make your home reflect your personality?  I’d love to see pics!  Share in the comments below.

I’ve found that it’s trial and error, Shelby. I try to create a mood board for each room and that helps me a lot!

I had just been thinking about a lot of the same things as I wrote my last post about the atypical home decor we have around our place, so really enjoyed seeing this. Coincidentally, masks and whiskey play a role in our decor as well! I think it’s really important to put in those personal touches and to give yourself permission to have whatever makes you happy in your house, even if some people wouldn’t”get” it. (And I’m envious of anybody who has a bedroom converted to thier closet!)

    • Lynn 07/07/2017, 4:16 PM

Oh, I love that! I always say it’s those personal touches that turn a house into a home. πŸ™‚

  • stephanie 07/07/2017, 8:01 PM

Great tips. I find displaying items from different periods in your life and from your travels can add a lot of history and interest to your space.

  • Emily 07/08/2017, 5:24 PM

I love the touches that bring out so much about you! Really helps to make your space as personal as possible.

    • Lynn 07/10/2017, 11:18 PM

      Yes it does!
